When School Becomes Overwhelming
School can be a major source of stress for teens—grades, tests, friendships, teachers, sports, and future plans all pile up. Some teens push themselves quietly until they begin to feel anxious, exhausted, or hopeless about keeping up.
Signs of School-Related Anxiety
Watch for school refusal, frequent stomach aches or headaches, perfectionism, tears over homework, late-night studying, or suddenly not caring about school at all. Both overworking and giving up can be signs that the pressure feels too heavy.
How to Talk About It
Instead of asking only about grades, ask how school feels. “Which classes feel stressful? Which feel manageable?” “What are you most worried about right now?” Listening without jumping straight to solutions helps your teen feel understood, not managed.
Adjusting Expectations
It’s okay to revisit expectations when your teen’s mental health is suffering. This might mean fewer activities, more realistic grade goals, or temporary changes to homework routines. Your teen needs to know that their wellbeing matters more to you than their report card.
Getting Extra Support
School counselors, teachers, 504 plans, tutors, and therapists can all be part of a support system. You do not have to figure it out alone, and neither does your teen.
