When Friends Have More Influence Than You Do
During the teen years, friends often feel more important than family. Peer pressure is powerful because belonging is powerful. Teens may go along with things they do not fully agree with to avoid feeling left out or rejected.
How Peer Pressure Works
Pressure can be direct—like daring someone to drink or vape—or subtle, like jokes, group norms, and the fear of being the only one who says no. Social media intensifies this by constantly showing what others are doing.
Helping Teens Name Their Values
Talk with your teen about what kind of person they want to be, in friendships, dating, school, and online. When they connect with their own values, it becomes easier to make decisions that fit who they are—not just what others want.
Giving Them Language for Hard Moments
Practice phrases such as, “I’m good,” “I have stuff to do tomorrow,” or “My parents are strict about that.” Having ready-made exit lines makes it easier for teens to step away without feeling like they are giving a speech.
Staying Connected So They Come to You
When teens know they can tell you what happened without a blowup, they are more likely to ask for help. Emphasize that you care more about their safety and wellbeing than about perfection.
