When Anger Feels Like the Only Emotion You See
Many parents say, My teen is angry all the time. Underneath that anger, there is often hurt, fear, shame, or sadness that a teen does not know how to express.
Anger as a Covering Emotion
Anger can feel safer than vulnerability. It pushes people away before they can reject or disappoint. When you see anger, it may help to gently wonder what softer feeling might be hiding underneath.
Staying Steady When Your Teen Is Exploding
Your own calm is one of the most powerful tools you have. Taking a breath, speaking quietly, and setting boundaries without yelling teaches your teen that big emotions do not have to lead to broken relationships.
Teaching Healthy Ways to Express Anger
Teens can learn to name their feelings, take breaks, write or talk things out, and repair after conflict. These skills develop over time and often improve with the help of a counselor or mentor.
When to Get Extra Help
If anger leads to threats, self-harm, destruction, or ongoing family distress, outside support can make a big difference. Anger is not who your teen is; it is a signal that something deeper needs attention.
