When Your Teen’s Spark Seems to Fade
Depression in teens can look like sadness, irritability, exhaustion, or a loss of interest in things they once enjoyed. As a parent, it can be painful to see your child hurting and not know how to reach them.
Common Signs of Teen Depression
Warning signs may include changes in sleep and appetite, pulling away from friends and family, dropping grades, low energy, or expressions of hopelessness. Sometimes teens hide their pain behind jokes or a busy schedule.
Why Teens May Not Ask for Help
Many teens feel embarrassed, guilty, or afraid of worrying their parents. They may believe they are a burden or that no one will understand.
How to Start the Conversation
You can open the door by saying something like, I have noticed you seem more down lately, and I care about you. How have you been feeling inside? Listening without rushing to fix allows your teen to share more honestly.
Depression Is Treatable
Therapy, sometimes combined with medication, can help teens understand their feelings and build skills to manage them. With support and time, many teens move from depression into a place of greater stability and hope.
