When You Suspect Your Teen Is Being Bullied
Bullying can happen in hallways, group chats, social media, and even within friend groups. Many teens who are being bullied feel ashamed or afraid to talk about it, worried that telling an adult will make things worse.
How Bullying and Cyberbullying Show Up
Warning signs can include anxiety about school, sudden changes in friends, physical complaints, deleted social media accounts, or your teen guarding their phone. Online bullying often happens through group chats, posts, comments, and screenshots.
Creating Space for Honest Conversation
You might say, “If anything is going on with friends or online, I want to understand and help, not make it worse.” Focusing on listening rather than immediately reacting helps your teen feel safer opening up.
Responding Without Blame
Avoid questions like, “What did you do?” or “Why didn’t you stand up for yourself?” Instead, focus on safety and options: documenting incidents, blocking or reporting accounts, and involving school staff when needed.
Helping Your Teen Heal
Supportive friendships, counseling, and family connection all help counter the shame and isolation that bullying creates. Your consistent message—“You did not deserve this, and you are not alone”—can be deeply healing.
