When You Suspect Your Teen Is Being Bullied
Bullying can take many forms: teasing, exclusion, rumors, online harassment, or physical intimidation. Teens often feel ashamed or afraid to talk about it, worried that telling will make things worse.
Signs Your Teen Might Be Experiencing Bullying
Warning signs can include anxiety about school, physical complaints, changes in sleep, withdrawing from friends, sudden grade drops, or guarding their phone and social media.
Creating a Safe Space to Share
Let your teen know you will listen before you react. You might say, If something is going on with friends or at school, I want to understand and help, not make it worse.
Responding Without Blame
Avoid asking, What did you do? or Why did you let this happen? Focus instead on safety, support, and options. Together you can explore steps like documenting incidents, involving school staff, or adjusting social situations.
Helping Your Teen Rebuild Confidence
Supportive friendships, activities they enjoy, counseling, and family connection all help counter the shame and isolation that bullying creates. Your belief in your teen’s worth is a powerful antidote to the messages they receive from bullies.
